Subterranean termites are by far the most destructive of all wood-destroying insects. They strike five times as many homes as fires and do more economic damage than all tornadoes, hurricanes and windstorms combined. They have the longest life span of any other household pest. Termites eat, breed and move in their sealed passages and consume enormous amount of structural wood before they are detected. There are a number of termite species, which feed on cellulose and therefore occur in dwelling houses and other buildings. They do not move about outdoors or on the ground surface and are therefore difficult to detect. They built their nest in the ground and travel from there, through the galleries and attack the wood through which they tunnel. Termites cause extensive damage to structural timber, plastics, furniture, clothing and anything at all that they come across. CONTROL TREATMENT When discovered at this stage, it is considered as being very advanced and is expensive to remedy. However, remedial treatment against subterranean termites is considered as one of the most basic forms of termite control. This is done by introducing poisonous Dust (arsenic trioxide AT) at the infested areas with the assistance of a duster, executed manually. The purpose is to allow the toxic particles of the chemicals to get entangled to the feet and bodies of the living termites, which are subsequently transported from one destination to another during the scavenging process for food. With such movements, the toxic elements are quite evenly distributed within their mud tube system and the transmission of the dust provides 60% eradication of the termite colonies.
Rodents are a major pest in almost every country of the world because the cause serious structural damages and spread dangerous diseases. The two species which are very wide spread are the common rats - rattus, and the brown rat - rattus norvegious. Both species of rat attack almost any food or stored commodity. Rats are renowned carriers of disease organisms and their presence near food creates a severe health risk. In addition, they are destructive pest and often cause substantial damage to properties by gnawing away all types of material. All rodent pests can spread diseases to both man and livestock. The majority of rodents carry a bacterium which causes leptospirio, known as "Well's" disease - an increasingly common and dangerous disease as well as the pneumonic plague. The recent outbreak of the pneumonic plague in India is a classic case of how dangerous the rat is to mankind. The disease which was believed to have been eliminated a long time ago, resurfaced and causes panic all over the world and extra precautions had to be taken against the deadly disease. It is understood that India itself suffered a major economic loss running into millions as a result of this outbreaks. CONTROL TREATMENT Initially, rat bait stations are set up extensively at strategic positions with special attention being paid to storage and canteen areas. The rat bait used is Martikus. It is colored pink for easy identification. Baiting points will be laid along the perimeter of the building to intercept rodents from penetrating from the adjoining areas. These baits will be checked and replenished as and when necessary.
Ants are one of the largest groups of insects known to man. Their nests can be found almost anywhere. Some live under lawns, stones or in the wood of decaying trees or under building foundations. Others live within cavities in walls and roof voids. Foraging worker ants are a nuisance as they travel widely in search of food following well defined ant trails and clusters around the food source. Most species of ants are attracted to sweet or fatty substance and are found in kitchens, pantries, storerooms and warehouses. Ants are social insects that live in more or less permanent nests. Ants are common intruders of homes and commercial buildings and are obviously unwanted in restaurants or food outlets as they may damage or taint food intended for human consumption. CONTROL TREATMENT The control of ants is made difficult by their highly developed social organization of their nests in places where it is easy to gain access. However, a systematic form of treatment will be carried out of all known and possible areas where ants breed and harbor, especially in canteens and office areas. The insecticide used has a good knockdown effect and lasting residual properties.
Cockroaches as pests in Malaysia are commonly divided mainly into 3 categories:- 1. American cockroaches (Periplanetta American) 2. Oriental cockroaches (Blatta Orientalis) 3. German cockroaches (Blatta Germancia) Cockroaches represent one of the most serious risks to public health because they spread diseases such as gastroenteritis, diarrhea and salmonella which contribute to food poisoning. They present a problem not only in food stores, restaurants and catering establishments but also in the home, living in kitchens and drains and sewage outlets. They all carry filth and disease from refuse to food preparation areas and contaminate the food we eat. Cockroaches are common in commercial premises associated with the production or handling of food. By day, they hide in cracks and crevices around the area such as sinks, drains, cookers, backs of cupboards, refrigerators and other unseen areas. By night, they come out of their hiding places to explore, in search of food. They particularly favour buildings with service ducts, dry risers and complex plumbing installations which allow them to move from one area of the building to another with considerable ease. CONTROL TREATMENT Roaches are controlled by thorough spraying of their harborage areas, breeding grounds and runways with residual insecticide. It is essential to avoid contamination of food or surfaces on which food are handled. Sensitive areas such as toilets, gulley traps and sewage manholes are harborage areas where they breed by the thousands. Application of chemical concentration with strong residual acticity will be the only effective way to deal with these breed of pests.
Since different mosquito species belong to the same zoological group, they have a number of common characteristics. They breed close to dwelling houses in urban and rural areas, mainly in muddy waters, ponds and stagnant waters to lay eggs. With their piercing and sucking mouthparts, the female mosquitoes withdraw from mammals (human and animals) the blood they require for egg production. Most species hide during the day and do not become active until dusk and during the night. They are not only nuisances; they are especially dangerous as vectors of many diseases. CONTROL TREATMENT Fogging Treatment A good knockdown fogging solution is used to fog the surrounding areas and other necessary areas where fogging is found essential for the control of mosquitoes and flying vectors. However, there is no residual effect and it does not prevent other mosquitoes from the neighboring surrounding areas to fly in and breed in the premise. Larvacide Treatment Control of larvae with liquid, dust or granular formulations of insecticides can be accomplished in a simple and technically uncomplicated manner using hand sprayers or dusters (manually).
